Ӱpro Dancers Grow as Artists and Leaders
While preparing for the Ӱpro Dance Company fall concert, Liam McEwan ’27 and Izzy Diaz ’28 found opportunities for self-expression, leadership, and connection.
Over three nights of shows, members of the Dance Company performed choreography by Ӱpro dance faculty and guest artists—the culmination of a semester’s worth of work.
“I’ve seen the work the dancers put in, and it makes me extremely happy to be part of an amazing program that keeps growing each year,” said McEwan, a dance and psychology joint major and president of the Dance Company.
Joining the Dance Company during his first year on campus gave McEwan, who has been dancing for 13 years, the chance to continue exploring the art of dance at a college level.
“I’ve been able to grow exponentially as a dancer, choreographer, and teacher,” McEwan said.
For Diaz, participating in dance has been a source of community and connection from a young age and she knew she wanted it to be part of her college experience.
“My top priority [at Ӱpro] was getting involved in the dance community,” she said. “I knew that I would find my people there.”
Diaz added that joining the Dance Company has shaped her college experience in other, more unexpected ways, presenting leadership opportunities as early as her first year and changing the way she engages with subject material in her other courses.
“I have been given the opportunity to work with our amazing professors, as well as stepping into a leadership role as a choreographer for the 2025 Spring Dance Concert,” Diaz said.
She intends to double major in dance and psychology and added that studying both has revealed unexpected ways in which the disciplines complement each other. “As I dance, I am actively combining my knowledge of movement and the body-mind connection.”
